Annual Great Texas Warrant Roundup begins today
MURPHY (February 9, 2018) The annual Great Texas Warrant Roundup begins today, Friday, Feb. 9, targeting defendants with outstanding violations including traffic fines, violations of local municipal ordinances and state law violations.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Murphy Police Department, will join with some 300 jurisdictions across Texas concentrating their efforts to address non-compliance with court orders.
Notices were recently mailed statewide by participating entities to inform those with outstanding warrants that the local police departments, constables, and other law enforcement agencies will be participating in a joint effort to have these cases resolved.
Agencies will be stepping up efforts to actively serve warrants beginning Saturday, Feb. 24.
“Resolving issues like tickets and citations will prevent people from being arrested,” says Patti Towne, Murphy Municipal Court Administrator. “Those who ignore the notice run the risk of being placed under arrest, and if that person is driving their vehicle, the car or truck could be impounded. Needless to say, that can mean additional towing and storage fees.”
A sure way to avoid arrest is to voluntarily appear at Municipal Court, located at the Murphy Police Department, 206 North Murphy Road. Affected individuals must contact the Municipal Court at 972-468-4250 or appear in person at the Municipal Court window as soon as possible to explore available options.
Under Texas Law, individuals who appear before a court and make a good faith effort to resolve their outstanding Class C warrants are afforded safe harbor and not subject to arrest. Additionally, if a judgment is rendered against an individual who is unable to pay the judgment, the individual may request a judge to assess their ability to pay and offer alternative means to satisfy the judgment.
Municipal Court is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Payments can be made with cash, credit card or certified check. Personal checks will not be accepted. Payments can also be made on the Municipal Court website at www.murphytx.org/105/Courts. In some cases, payment can be made over the phone.
Experienced Court Clerks are available to answer questions and provide additional information.
