Murphy sets public meetings to update bond projects

‘On Pace with Progress’ theme of two sessions

MURPHY (February 8, 2019) Two public meetings designed to provide residents with the latest information on the status of Capital Improvement Projects, financed through proceeds from the 2017 bond election, have been set for City Hall.

To be held in Council Chambers, 206 North Murphy Road, on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. and on Saturday, March 2 at 9 a.m., the two open sessions are billed as a way for residents to obtain the most current information on the projects.  The sessions are presented under the overall theme of “On Pace with Progress” according to City Manager Mike Castro, PhD.

“There are quite a few projects on the list, and we know that residents may be interested in learning only about those that affect them directly,” he said.  “What we’re doing with the updates is giving participants a high-level overview of where we are with the projects that they might not be keeping an eye on.  We’ll also talk a little about the financing structure and how using technology can keep residents fully informed on all aspects of the projects.”

Both the Thursday and Saturday updates will begin with displays and exhibits in the foyer outside the Council Chambers that describe the projects in general terms.  Staff members will be available during this open session to orient visitors to the projects and answer questions.

The projects fall into three major categories, called propositions, which were approved by voters in November 2017.  Proposition A includes street improvements, at a cost of $15,510,000 in General Obligation (GO) bonds.  Proposition B includes improvements to public safety facilities, totaling $1,735,000 in GO bonds.  Proposition D includes improvements to parks and recreational facilities, financed by $4,400,000 in GO bonds.

Following the informal displays, a structured presentation on the status of these projects will begin 30 minutes after doors open, hosted by the City Manager.  Among those making presentations during the update are Tim Rogers, Public Services Director, Controller Ernie Bannister, IT Director Taylor Prentice, and Ken Lee, Bond Project Manager.

The “On Pace with Progress” update will emphasize the ease and convenience of obtaining current information through the City of Murphy website, www.murphytx.org, and will encourage attendees to visit the page, make it a favorite, share it with neighbors, and refer to it frequently.
