Driving Safety Course:

Driving Safety Course (not an option if you currently have or had a commercial driver’s license at the time of the citation).  This is an option for dismissal of many traffic violations if you meet the following criteria: 

  • A speeding violation must be under 25 miles per hour over the speed limit;
  • You cannot have taken a driving safety course for dismissal of a citation within the last twelve months;
  • Offense cannot have been committed in a school zone;
  • You must have a Texas driver’s license (not commercial) – other conditions apply to active military.

You must do the following to be granted Driving Safety Course:

  • You must notify the Court, in writing, of your intent to take a driving safety course on or before the appearance date listed on your citation, including an affidavit stating you have not completed a driving safety course within the last twelve months for dismissal of a citation; (CLICK HERE FOR DSC APPLICATION/AFFIDAVIT)(SPANISH VERSION)
  • You must enter a plea of either No Contest or Guilty;
  • You must submit proof of current liability insurance and a copy of your current Texas drivers license;
  • You must pay a non-refundable fee of $112.00 or a fee of $137.00 if violation was in a school zone;
  • Do not take the driving safety course until you have entered your plea, submitted proof of current liability insurance and Texas drivers license and paid your fee;
  • Payments: The Court accepts cash, checks, money orders, Master Card and Visa. Please make check or money order payable to: City of Murphy.

 

After you have requested DSC and been notified by the Court of approval:

  • You must obtain your certified driving record from the Texas Department of Public Safety within ninety days of the initial request (by the due date) – this is now available on their website at www.texasonline.com ;
  • Your driving safety course must be approved by the Texas Education Agency. You can go online at www.tea.state.tx.us/drive for information on approved courses
  • You must submit to the Court a signed certificate of completion of the driving safety course and your certified driving record within ninety days of the initial request
  • A show cause hearing will be scheduled if Court does not receive required documents within the 90 day period
  • Upon receipt of the above, your citation will be dismissed.   If the required items are not received by the Court by the due date, a show cause hearing will be scheduled.
