Public Works

The operation of the Public Works Department is for protecting the public welfare through the design, construction, repairs, and maintenance of all city streets, water and wastewater utilities, storm drainage systems, water and wastewater distribution and collection, and Capital Improvements.

The City of Murphy purchases water from North Texas Municipal Water District. With two large capacity supply lines passing through the city, sufficient water for the foreseeable future is assured. A water tower with 1 million gallons capacity has been installed on Betsy Lane in the northern part of the city.  A second water tower is scheduled to be in operation by summer 2011.

Diesel generator backup power supplies have been installed to ensure that water and wastewater services will have power available even through any extended power outages.

Spring and Fall sometimes brings a change of odor and flavor to the public water supply since our water source includes surface lake water. This is not a health hazard. Click here for the fact sheet on taste and odor.

The City of Murphy supplies water to approximately 5,500 households and businesses. The water department has 3 water storage tanks including 1,000,000 gallon ground storage tank, a ground storage tank holding 250,000 gallons, and an elevated tank holding 1,000,000 gallons, and a 2,000,000 gallon ground storage tank. The city’s water pressure is about 60 to 70 PSI.

The city has a complete sewer system with required capacity by connecting to a 30 inch line with the Muddy Creek Regional Waste Water Treatment Facility in Wylie, Texas.
