TO: Officer Jason Smith CC: Mr. James Fisher, City Manager/Mrs. Stacey Buckley, HR Manager/Lt. Adana Barber, Operations Manager/Sgt. Jim Hermes, Shift Commander FROM: Chief G. M. Cox DATE: February 9, 2010 RE: Officer of the Year for 2009
I want to congratulate you on being named Officer of the Year for 2009. The process for selection of the officer to be given this designation includes a nomination period from peers and a review of performance and other job related factors by the command staff, Lt. Barber and me.
Several dramatic changes occurred in the MPD in 2009. Among those changes was the elimination of the School Liaison Officer (SLO) program, which brought about your reassignment to patrol. You were given the task of developing a program focusing patrol, crime prevention, and community policing tactics in the newly created Central Business District (CBD) patrol district. You did so with zeal, professionalism and a positive attitude. You scheduled yourself for evenings, mornings, and weekends to get a better idea of the needs and unique aspects of this patrol district so that you could be more efficient and effective. Furthermore, you visited every business in the CBD to get an idea of their needs and wants as it related to the activities that you could address with your patrol duties. Along with your assigned duties, you have willingly come in to work regular patrol shifts when they needed your help. Additionally, on occasion, your expertise developed over the years as the SLO was put to good use when a situation developed at the local schools, you, gladly, responded to the situation. You, truly, epitomize the ideal of the consummate professional who has a great attitude about his job and co-workers and who is looked upon as a positive role model and peer leader.
One of the greatest awards a person can receive is the admiration and appreciation from peers. In this case, your peers spoke and the command staff concurred with their selection of you as Officer of the Year.
Congratulations! And, keep up the great work and attitude.
As a by-product of being named Officer of the Year, you are authorized to attend any job related training opportunity, seminar, or workshop, conducted, in the state, maximum of a week, within the next 12 months. It is the city's small way of thanking you for your accomplishment and hard work.
