The Patrol Division is the most visible element of the Police Department. It is currently divided into 3-10 hour shifts. Patrol officers are the first responders to a wide variety of calls varying from simple theft to more complex and detailed crimes such as robbery or assault. Patrol officers are routinely involved with:
Enforcement of laws
Apprehension of suspects
Taking reports
Conducting criminal investigations
Traffic enforcement
Crime prevention
Focused or special patrols
The Patrol Division supplements the number of officers on duty with Reserve Officers. These are men and women who volunteer their time as police officers for the City of Murphy. They meet the same qualifications as full time paid officers and hold a license from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training.
Specialized areas within the Patrol Division include the Traffic and K-9 units.
The Murphy Police Department is making great strides to keep up with technological advances. With the new Communications Center in operation, patrol officers now have Mobile Data Computers (MDC) in their vehicles. These computers link the officers to the Communications Center connecting them to the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), Intelligence Based Records System (IBRS) and the state and federal crime computers. Patrol vehicles are also equipped with Mobile Video Recorders to enhance patrol functions such as capturing a suspect’s behavior and reinforcing the officer’s testimony in court. These cameras have additional benefits such as improving officer safety, as well as, accountability.
In the Patrol Division, the focus is on protecting life and property and enforcing laws in a fair and impartial manner. This helps the department practice its motto of “Partners with the Community”.
