SOLICITORS IN MURPHY

 

Murphy Tx – The Murphy Police Department would like to alert all our residents to the fact that there are some people who come to our city and attempt to go door-to-door, particularly in the residential areas, pitching various products and services. According to the City Code of Ordinances (Sec. 54.3), all persons who intend to solicit business must first obtain a permit from the City of Murphy before going into the city and making their sales pitches.

Also, it has come to our attention that some of the solicitors, even those with appropriately issued credentials, are using very aggressive techniques, such as pushing their way into homes or just not taking “No” for an answer. This type of behavior is totally unacceptable and depending upon circumstances could cross-over from simple aggressive sales techniques to illegal conduct. Also, bear in mind that soliciting after sunset and on certain days and holidays is totally prohibited.

The MPD requests that any citizen experiencing a difficult or unpermitted solicitor, call us so that we can have an officer interact with these people. We are particularly interested in solicitors that go beyond normal interpersonal interactions, such as not letting you shut your door or using inappropriate language. It is totally appropriate, given the time of day or personal circumstances, to not even open you door to deal with these folks. Just tell them, through the door, that you are not interested and that you have notified the Murphy PD, and let us handle the rest. DO NOT TAKE THESE FOLKS ON YOURSELF.

Thank you for your attention to this situation. Remember; keep crime prevention and personal safety in mind at all times when dealing with strangers, particularly in our neighborhoods and at our front doors. The Murphy PD is here to serve you and protect your property.
