Murphy became a part of Tree City USA in fall of 2010. Tree City USA is a program designed to provide the tools necessary for forestry management to cities and communities across America. Becoming a Tree City USA is a commitment to caring for and maintaining Murphy's trees. Today there are more than 3,400 Tree City USA communities which serve as home to more than 135 million Americans.
Murphy Becomes a Tree City USA
In order to become eligible for Tree City USA distinction, a city must adopt 4 core standards of urban forestry management.
Distinction of a Tree Board or Department. At Murphy, Kim Lenoir, Director of Parks and Public Works fills this requirement.
An established Tree Ordinance. Murphy City Council passed the Murphy Tree Care Ordinance on
March 1, 2011.
A community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita.
An Arbor Day Observance Proclamation. Murphy City Council has announced an Arbor Day Proclamation each year since becoming a part of Tree City USA.
